-
Died: Possibly 02-Jun-1886 in Gridley, Butte County, California
The death date and location are not known for certain.
The "John Vogel" who died 02-Jun-1886 in Gridley,
according to a newspaper item,
may be John Voegele.
- Residences:
- 1834 birth record: Soufflenheim
- 1850,
1855,
1860 census:
Lancaster, New York
- 1860 census,
1863 draft registration:
Gibsonville, Sierra County, California
- In the 1860 U.S. census, John appears twice:
in New York and California.
In the New York census, he is listed last in his household,
below his younger sisters, which may indicate that he was not physically present.
A possible explanation is that John, with his brothers Henry and Frank,
departed New York for California in the Spring of 1860,
reaching California in time to be recorded in the census there.
Word of John's arrival would not have had time to reach his parents back in New York
in time for the census, and so John's parents declared him
to be still a member of their household.
The parents did not declare their other sons to be members of the household
because (another guess here) these sons, being older than John,
had already moved out of their parents' home,
and were not residing there in early 1860.
- 1870 census (possible match): San Francisco, California
- 1880 census (possible match): Yuba City, Sutter County, California
- 1886 death (possible match): Gridley, Butte County, California
Vögele, Joseph · 1759-1832 ·
Voegele, Joseph · 1790-1868 ·
- Born: 14-Jul-1790
in Soufflenheim, Alsace, France
- The birthdate 14-Jul-1790 is given in his 1821 marriage record.
Birth dates given in the Soufflenheim marriage records are typically accurate.
- All birth records for the year 1790 are missing from the Soufflenheim archives,
so the birth record for Joseph Voegele has not been found
-
His tombstone gives 19-Mar-1788 as his birthdate.
This cannot be correct, because the Soufflenheim records show that
Joseph had an older brother, also named Joseph,
who was born 19-Dec-1788 and died two days later.
- Immigrated to US: 1847
- Ship: Exchange,
arrived in New York harbor 09-Jul-1847, from Le Havre
- Died: 01-Feb-1868 in Lancaster, New York
- Feb-1866 according to notes I took from a cemetery visit in 1967
- Buried: St. Mary's Church Cemetery, Lancaster, New York
- Son of Joseph Vögele and Margaretha Götz
- Husband of Catherine Miller
- Occupation: Farmer
- Residences:
Voegele, Joseph · 1823-1890 ·
- Anecdote: California Gold Rush
- Although according to family lore Joseph went with his brother John
to California for the Gold Rush,
the records that we can find indicate that he did not.
Joseph and his wife and children are living in Cheektowaga NY
in the 1860 and 1865 census.
He is also living in Cheektowaga in 1863 at the time of the Civil War Draft Registration.
It is possible that Joseph went to California much later,
perhaps to search for the lost John.
We are told the story that when Joseph returned from California,
he caught his son (Joseph) out playing hooky as he neared his home.
If this incident is true it would have occurred in the 1870's,
when the younger Joseph was school age.
