According to his army discharge document, William E.G. Smith (1900-1957) was born in Manistique, Michigan.

From the marriage ledger of Schoolcraft County: William E. Smith and Alice Gregg married June 20, 1899.

In September, 2000, I contacted Florence T. "Alex" Meron, CGRS, a genealogist in Manistique who has microfilmed many of the records from the Michigan upper peninsula. Here is what she found:

• Marriage Record, 17-Jun-1899 -- William E Smith 28, married to Alice Gregg 17 June 1899. Witness to marriage is Epbret H Smith and Freda M Smith. At the First Baptist Church. William is the son born in N.Y. of Wm. E. Smith & Emma St. John Smith. Alice Gregg is 19 years old born in Tennessee. Alice shows residence of Gould City MI.
  Ms. Meron adds, "Looks to me like the mother Emma had been married before. The name Remefelt (?) has line then St. John written in."
  • The image of the record available on Ancestry.com, shown here, does not have the cross-out and addition of "St. John."
• 1900 Census -- Also the 1900 Federal Census for Schoolcraft County has Wm. E Smith and Alice F he born 8/1870 N.Y she 11/1879 Tennessee. Her parents born in N.C.
• Birth Certificate, 06-Sep-1900 -- William E Smith son of William E and Alice, born in the City of Manistique, September 6 1900. Recorded in Book #1 Page 162. Birth Book Schoolcraft County.
• Under Michigan law these records are closed to the public for 110 years. So they should become open to the public by 2010.
