The BALTHASAR Family Album
(Notes from 1980)

I (Brian J. Smith) wrote this description of the Balthasar Family Album on 27-Sep-1980. Notes in brackets and italics were added by me in July-2003.

The Balthasar family album contains thirty-six pages of photographs. The first thirty contain one photograph each. The last six pages each contain space for four photos, although some of the spots are empty. There are also seven photographs, not part of the album, inserted inside the back cover.

All identification of the people pictured is by Munner [my grandmother, Josephine Regina Voegele Staebell]. She and I went through the album in August, 1980, and I wrote down the names as she told them to me. I have sorted them out into the form presented here.

After going through the album with Munner, I removed each photograph to look for information that might be written on the backs. All but two were blank, except for an occasional photographer's name and address. The two with writing were:

I should point out that Munner had correctly identified the people in both these pictures before I looked on the back.

The FAMILIES

Listed here are the family members who appear in the album. This should give some idea of how everybody is related. For some families, there were other children, but only those featured in the album are included here. Dates of birth and death of these people are generally not known. The order in which brothers and sisters of a family are listed does not indicate their relative age; usually, children are listed in the order they appear in the album.

The relationship of Rose OTT (photo F5) must also be explained: Rose OTT was the daughter of Louis OTT. This is presumably the same Louis OTT at whose Gardenville home photo F2 was taken in 1902. Louis was the nephew of Catherine Ott Voegele. Furthermore, he married a sister (name unknown) of Joseph Voegele, the husband of Catherine Ott.

[The previous paragraph contains some inaccuracies. Catherine Ott Voegele had both a brother and a nephew named Louis Ott, who were father and son. Rose Ott was the daughter of the senior Louis Ott, who was Catherine's brother, not her nephew.]

Also pictured in the album are members of the PFEIFFER family. Their relation to the Balthasars, if any, is not known, Joseph PFEIFFER and his wife, Josephine, are pictured in photo 28. Josephine's father, possibly the man in photo 12, was the godfather of Anna Regina Balthasar Voegele. Photo 29 shows Joseph and Josephine Pfeiffer's children: Edmund and Josephine.
